Why Your Baby Wakes Up at Night: Baby Sleep Cycles, Explained

It's 2am. Your baby was sound asleep an hour ago, and now they're wide awake — again. If you've ever stood over the crib wondering what am I doing wrong?, I want to start with the most important thing in this whole article: probably nothing.

Night wakings aren't a flaw in your baby. They're built into the architecture of infant sleep. Once you understand how baby sleep cycles actually work, the 2am wake-ups start to make a lot more sense — and you can start working with your baby's biology instead of against it.

Baby Sleep Cycles Are Shorter Than Yours

Adults move through a full sleep cycle in roughly 90 minutes. Babies? Their cycles run closer to 45 to 60 minutes, especially in the first year. That means your baby reaches the end of a cycle — and hits a natural point of lighter sleep — far more often than you do in a night.

At the end of every cycle, there's a brief window where the brain surfaces toward wakefulness. Adults pass through these moments dozens of times a night without ever remembering them. Babies are still learning that skill. When they surface and something feels different from when they fell asleep — the room is quieter, the arms that held them are gone — they're much more likely to fully wake and call for you.

Babies Spend Far More Time in Active Sleep

Newborns spend roughly half their sleep in what's called active sleep — the infant version of REM. You've seen it: fluttering eyelids, twitching hands, little grunts and squirms. Active sleep is where enormous amounts of brain development happen, which is exactly why babies get so much of it.

But active sleep is also light sleep. A baby in active sleep is easier to rouse — by a door creak, a temperature shift, or simply their own startle reflex. So the very thing driving your baby's development is also what makes them a lighter sleeper than you. It's a feature, not a bug. An exhausting feature, but a feature.

The Real Culprit: Sleep Associations

Here's the part that changed how I thought about night wakings with my own kids. Babies don't just fall asleep — they fall asleep under certain conditions. Rocking, feeding, a particular sound, your presence. When they surface between cycles at 2am and those conditions have vanished, their brain essentially sounds an alarm: something changed.

This is why a baby who falls asleep in your arms and gets transferred to the crib often wakes 45 minutes later, right on schedule. They completed one cycle, surfaced, and noticed the world was different. The fix isn't eliminating comfort — it's making sure some of the conditions present at bedtime are still present at 2am.

What Actually Helps

Keep the sleep environment consistent all night. Whatever your baby falls asleep with should still be there when they surface between cycles. This is the single biggest lever, and it's why continuous, consistent sound is one of the most effective tools parents have. A steady audio environment bridges those between-cycle wake-ups so a surfacing baby hears the same thing they fell asleep to.

Watch wake windows, not just bedtime. An overtired baby produces more stress hormones, which paradoxically makes it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Age-appropriate wake windows during the day often do more for night sleep than anything you do at night.

Give them a beat before you respond. Not every noise between cycles is a true waking. Babies often grunt, squirm, even briefly cry as they transition — and then settle themselves. Rushing in during a partial arousal can turn a transition into a full wake-up. A short pause gives them the chance to practice linking cycles on their own.

Keep night interactions boring. When you do need to go in, keep lights low and warm, voices soft, and stimulation minimal. You're signaling that nighttime is for sleep, not for connection — that's what daytime is for.
