Is White Noise Bad for Babies? An Honest Answer

The short answer: no. At safe volume and distance, white noise is not bad for babies — it's one of the more useful sleep tools available. The risk comes from running a machine too loud, too close, for too long. Keep it around 50 decibels or below at your baby's sleep space, place it across the room rather than on the crib, and it's a helpful tool rather than a hazard.

That's the whole answer. The rest of this article is why, what the research actually found, and the handful of situations where the concern is legitimate.

Where the worry comes from

Most of the anxiety traces back to one real study. In 2014, Hugh and colleagues published research in Pediatrics testing fourteen infant sleep machines. They found that at maximum volume and close range, many of them produced sound pressure levels above the limits recommended for hospital nurseries. A few were loud enough that prolonged close exposure could theoretically pose a hearing risk.

That finding is real and worth taking seriously. But it got flattened in the retelling. The study did not find that sound machines harm babies. It found that some machines, at maximum volume, placed very close to an infant, for long periods could exceed recommended limits. Those are four conditions, and you control all of them.

The two numbers that matter

Volume: around 50 dB or below

Roughly the level of a quiet office or steady rainfall. Fifty decibels is the noise limit generally recommended for hospital nursery environments, and it's a sensible ceiling at home.

You can check this in about thirty seconds. Download a free sound level meter app, hold your phone where your baby's head rests, and read the number while the machine runs at your usual setting. It isn't lab-grade, but it will tell you whether you're in the right range.

Distance: across the room, not on the crib

This matters as much as the dial, and most parents underestimate it. Sound energy falls off sharply with distance — roughly following the inverse-square law, so doubling the distance cuts the energy to about a quarter.

The practical consequence: a machine on a dresser across the nursery at a moderate setting can be entirely safe, while the same setting clipped to the crib rail is not. If you take one thing from this article, take that one.

What about clip-on use in strollers and car seats?

Perfectly fine — but turn the volume down. The device is sitting far closer to your baby's ears than it would across a nursery, so the setting that's right at six feet is too loud at six inches. This applies to every portable sound machine, ours included.

Does white noise cause speech delay?

This question comes up constantly, and the honest answer is that there is no good evidence that appropriate sound machine use causes speech delay.

The underlying theory is that constant background sound could interfere with the language exposure infants need. It's a reasonable hypothesis, and language exposure genuinely matters enormously for development. But sound machines are typically used during sleep, when a baby isn't engaged in language learning anyway.

Where the concern becomes legitimate is all-day use. A machine running through waking hours, during play and feeding and conversation, does reduce the amount of speech a baby hears. That's worth avoiding — not because sound machines are dangerous, but because talking to your baby is one of the highest-value things you can do.

Use it for sleep. Turn it off when your baby is awake and engaged.

Can a baby sleep with white noise all night?

Generally yes. Continuous sound is arguably more useful than a timer, because a machine that shuts off at 2am removes the masking right when household noise is most likely to wake a lightly sleeping baby. Just keep the volume and distance right.

Will my baby become dependent on it?

Babies do form sleep associations, and white noise can become one. Whether that's a problem depends entirely on how portable the association is.

A sound machine is a good association precisely because it travels. You can take it to a hotel, a grandparent's house, or daycare. Compare that to associations that require you personally — rocking, holding, feeding to sleep — which are far harder to reproduce at 3am in an unfamiliar room.

If you want to wean off it later, reduce the volume gradually over a week or two rather than stopping abruptly.

What we genuinely don't know

Long-term studies on sound machine use across childhood are thin. We have good short-term safety data on volume and hearing, and good evidence that sound masking reduces sleep disruption. We have much less on what years of nightly use does, if anything.

There's no signal suggesting a problem. But “no evidence of harm” and “evidence of no harm” are different statements, and anyone telling you otherwise is overstating what exists.

The practical summary

  • Around 50 dB or below at your baby's sleep space
  • Across the room, not in or on the crib
  • Turn it down when the machine is clipped close — strollers, car seats, carriers
  • Use it for sleep, not all day
  • Continuous through the night is fine
  • Check it with a phone app; it takes thirty seconds

None of this requires a particular brand. Whatever machine you own, the volume and the distance do nearly all of the work.
