If you've browsed Dreamer's soundscapes, you've seen "432 Hz" mentioned. Here's what it actually means — and an honest account of what the research does and doesn't show.
432 Hz is a tuning reference
Most modern music is tuned so that the A above middle C vibrates at 440 Hz, the international standard since 1953. Before standardization, various tunings were used, including 432 Hz — about 1.8% lower.
That's all it is: a slightly lower reference pitch. You'll also find claims that 432 Hz is aligned with the natural world or the universe. Those aren't claims we make or can support.
What the research says
The most relevant study is a 2019 double-blind cross-over pilot study by Calamassi and Pomponi, published in EXPLORE: The Journal of Science & Healing. Participants listened to the same piece at 432 Hz and at 440 Hz without knowing which was which.
At 432 Hz, participants showed a greater decrease in heart rate and systolic blood pressure, and reported feeling more relaxed.
The caveats matter. It's a pilot study with a small sample. Adults, not infants. It measured short-term physiological markers, not sleep outcomes. It hasn't been replicated at scale. It's an interesting early result — not a finished answer, and not evidence that 432 Hz helps babies sleep.
Why it's in Dreamer
Two reasons, and only one of them involves research.
The sound is warmer. Broadband white noise is a harsh hiss. A narrower, lower-tuned soundscape has a rounder character. Parents notice the difference at 3am, and that's a real benefit that doesn't depend on any contested science.
The research is worth following. If the frequency work firms up over the coming years, we'll have built the right thing. If it doesn't, we've still built a better-sounding machine.
What actually helps your baby sleep
The best-supported thing any sound machine does is masking — covering the intermittent noise that pulls a baby out of light sleep. That's most of the benefit, and it's true of every machine on the market.
And the single most important thing isn't which machine you own: it's volume and placement. The AAP recommends keeping sound machines at roughly 50 decibels or below at your baby's sleep space, with the machine placed away from the crib. Our safe-volume guide covers this properly.
